Atlas Pinnacle Pristine Shingles: A Florida Roofer's Guide

Atlas Pinnacle Pristine is an architectural shingle with 3M Scotchgard algae protection, a 42 inch wide shingle, a Class 3 impact rating, and a 130 mph wind warranty with the standard install, or up to 160 mph with the full Atlas Signature Select system. On a single-family home, the algae coverage lasts as long as the original owner does. It is the shingle we put on most of our roofs.

Product pages are written to sell, and warranty fine print is written by lawyers. Here is what Atlas actually promises on Pinnacle Pristine, which colors are sold in the Southeast, and how it compares with the two shingles it competes with most.

The algae warranty

The black streak coverage is the real difference

Florida humidity grows the algae that leaves black streaks on shingle roofs. Pinnacle Pristine uses 3M Scotchgard Protector granules to resist it, and on a single-family home Atlas covers that for the lifetime of the original owner. Owens Corning and GAF cover algae on their comparable shingles for 25 years.

Read the conditions. The coverage needs Atlas Scotchgard hip and ridge shingles, and the Scotchgard shingles have to cover the whole shingled roof. During the first years Atlas pays to clean, repair or replace the streaked shingles. After that it pays to clean them.

On the coast

Atlas recommends vinyl or copper gutters instead of aluminum where salt fog is common, when you use algae-resistant shingles. If you live near the water and have aluminum gutters, ask about it before the job starts.

The warranty

What "lifetime" means on an Atlas shingle

  1. Lifetime is your lifetime, not the roof's

On a single-family home, the shingle warranty lasts for the lifetime of the original owner. Homes owned by an LLC, a trust or a condo association get 50 years instead.

  2. Full coverage comes first

Atlas calls the first years the Premium Protection Period. It covers labor and materials with no proration: 10 years on the standard warranty, 15 years with Signature Select. After that, coverage is prorated.

  3. It transfers once

If you sell, the warranty can be transferred one time: within the first 15 years on the standard warranty, or the first 10 with Signature Select. The new owner pays Atlas a $100 fee within 60 days of the sale.

  4. Signature Select needs the full system

To get the upgrades, the roof needs Atlas hip and ridge shingles, Atlas underlayment over the whole deck and at least one more Atlas accessory, and it has to be registered within 60 days. Atlas's warranty does not require a certified installer. Ask whether your quote includes the full system.

  5. Storms are not covered

Atlas excludes hurricanes, tornadoes, hail and wind above the warranted speed. Storm damage is a homeowners insurance question, not a shingle warranty one.

Colors

Pinnacle Pristine colors in the Southeast

Atlas sells Pinnacle Pristine in a wide range of colors, and the list changes by region. Atlas's Southeast color sheets include Black Shadow, Coastal Granite, Hearthstone, Pewter, Summer Storm, Oyster Shell, Rustic Highland, Chestnut, Majestic Shake, Weathered Wood, Morning Harvest and Woodland Green. Weathered Shadow, Tan Mist and Sunset are marked as limited regional availability.

Some colors on Atlas's national page, like Burnt Hickory, are not on its Southeast lists. Ask us what local suppliers have before you settle on one.

Why we install it

When a homeowner has no brand in mind, Pinnacle Pristine is the shingle we install. It meets the Florida Building Code, it carries the longest algae coverage of the three shingles above, and its warranty terms are published in plain view.

We are a Florida licensed roofing contractor, license CCC1331076. We are not an Atlas certified installer, and we will not tell you otherwise.

FAQ

Common questions about Atlas Pinnacle Pristine

Is Atlas Pinnacle Pristine a good shingle for Florida?

It is approved under the Florida Building Code (FL 16305), passed the ASTM D7158 Class H wind test at 150 mph, and carries lifetime algae coverage on a single-family home. Those are the things that matter most on the Gulf Coast.

What wind speed is Pinnacle Pristine rated for?

The warranty covers 130 mph with the standard 4-nail install, for 15 years, and up to 160 mph when the full Atlas Signature Select system is installed and registered. In the lab it passed ASTM D7158 Class H at 150 mph.

Does Pinnacle Pristine have a lifetime warranty?

Yes, for the lifetime of the original owner of a single-family home, not the life of the roof. The first 10 years are full labor and material coverage, or 15 with Signature Select. Other owners, like an LLC or a trust, get 50 years.

Is the Atlas warranty transferable?

Once. On the standard warranty it can be transferred within the first 15 years, and with Signature Select within the first 10. The new owner pays Atlas $100 within 60 days of the sale.

Is Pinnacle Pristine impact resistant?

It is rated UL 2218 Class 3. Atlas's Class 4 shingle is Pinnacle Impact.

Does Pinnacle Pristine stop black streaks?

It resists them. The 3M Scotchgard Protector granules fight the algae that causes the streaks, and on a single-family home Atlas covers it for the lifetime of the original owner when Atlas Scotchgard hip and ridge shingles are used.
